FAQ

What is the Study About?

This project is about the experience of being pregnant and LGBTQ+. I want to hear from LGBTQ+ people about the language and labels they use as well as the stories they have about this experience. To do this, I want to conduct one-to-one and group interviews with people who fall into these categories.

What it is

It’s community centric: this study will be by the community for the community

It will address a gap in the wider knowledge: in the mainstream, pregnancy is often assumed to be a cis-gender and heterosexual experience. We know this isn’t true but there isn’t a lot written about it.

It is an inclusive project that open to anyone in the LGBTQ+ community.

What it’s not

It's not done in conjunction with prenatal care or training. I am not qualified to offer any medical advice.

It’s not going to ask you to prove yourself as queer or trans- participants will be encouraged to talk about how they see themselves and that can be in any way

It’s not going to assume people have particular genders or gender expression because they are or have been pregnant. This project aims, in part, to record the experiences of pregnancy beyond a cis-gender perspective.

What does Taking Part Involve?

There are two parts to the research project: interviews and focus groups. You can take part in both or just one.

The interviews and focus groups will take between 1-2 hours and can be at a place of convenience, as long as is quiet enough for the recording.

Taking part is of course optional, and you can change your mind anytime before or during the interview.

Interview and focus group participants will be compensated £15.00 for their time. The interview might cover some heavy topics about pregnancy and gender, and the body, and experiences with accessing healthcare. Topics can be skipped and there’s no pressure to talk about anything you would rather avoid.

Who can take part?

You need to be a member of the LGBTQ+ community and have been pregnant in the last five years. Partners and/or co-parents welcome! You also need to be over 18 and live in the UK.
